Experience African Association of Arizona

Who We are

Founding Elements

Founded in February 1992, the African Association of Arizona (AFASAZ) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. It was founded purposely to promote greater awareness and understanding of African conditions through educational and cultural activities. AFASAZ is non-partisan and does not belong to any organized political party, organized religion, or separatist movement. The association is open to all Africans and friends of Africa who subscribe to its vision and mission.

The association is actively involved in developing an infrastructure for networking, strengthening African families, and increasing the awareness and appreciation of Africa's rich cultural heritage.

African Festivals

Effective 1998, the African Association of Arizona (AFASAZ) organized African Festivals annually in Phoenix, except in 2005, when the Executive decided to devote the year to revamping the association by comprehensively amending the constitution, and in 2011 when the executive devoted the year to exploring more dependable sources of income/funds. Attendance at its annual African Festival has grown steadily between 500 and 1,000.

Conferences on Africa

In 1993, AFASAZ teamed up with Thunderbird School of Global Management to organize an international conference on “Africa Unity and Diversity.” In 1997, AFASAZ organized another international conference on Africa. AFASAZ has also organized an assortment of fun-filled activities, among them picnics, pot-lucks, summer banquets, fall banquets, a trip to Kingman, Arizona, and a trip to Africa.

Memberships

Open to friends of Africa, those who have latent interests in or a passion for (pan) Africa, and anyone who subscribes to AFASAZ's mission, vision, and values. Reach out at afasaorg92@gmail.com

History/Activities

Historically, AFASAZ partnered with the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1993 to host a three-day conference on business and investment opportunities in Africa in Glendale, Arizona, which attracted businessmen and women, corporate managers, industry experts, ambassadors, politicians, academics, and other participants from across the U.S., North America, and Africa.

In 1997, AFASAZ hosted a day-long conference at the Phoenix Civic Plaza in Phoenix, Arizona, which attracted academics, professionals, businesses and investors from Arizona and other parts of the United States, and the venerable Randal Robinson as the keynote speaker.

Since 1999, AFASAZ has organized African festivals annually in Phoenix, Arizona, which feature live entertainment, African music, African fashion, African cuisines, and African crafts. Also, AFASAZ has intermittently organized picnics, potlucks, needs-based fundraisers for African communities in Arizona and in Africa, scholarships and funding for African and non-Africans in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

In addition, to serving as a resource for K-12 schools, AFASAZ partners with and supports comparable cultural and civic organizations in the local community.
